Thats amazing - its hard to see any animal deprived of his mate - be it human or from the animal/bird kingdoms...we had something like this with two little Kingfishers one of which slammed into the window - I finally had to go out and take the little dead one away as he was exhausting himself and it was a really hot day...after I did he flew off somewhere...and hopefully found another mate.
One was hit by a car. His mate is bringing her some food. 
And tries to move her off the road.
But she expires...
